CEBU CITY--One of last year's most controversial world title duels will finally be given closure as WBO superflyweight champ Fernando Montiel is set to once again defend against Filipino Z "The Dream" Gorres in a 12-round rematch on October 11 at the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel in Macau, China.
"Received offer from (Bob) Arum of Top Rank for Gorres to fight Montiel in Macau," said Cebu sportsman Antonio Lopez Aldeguer, Gorres' chief benefactor whose son Michael manages the fighter.
The duo battled it out here in February last year, resulting in Montiel getting a split decision verdict over Gorres, a victory tainted by referee Samuel Viruet's proclivity to deduct points on the Filipino fighter.
Some experts believe Gorres should have won the fight if not for Viruet's whimsical deductions, while Montiel's camp maintains they indeed won the fight, and this time wants to give closure as to who is the better fighter.
Aldeguer added that the proposed Montiel-Gorres fight will be on the "same card with Donaire and Viloria," adding that Team Gorres is inclined to accept the offer.
"We are just waiting for the fight money offer and other terms and conditions," explained Aldeguer.
The card, as earlier announced by Arum, will have IBF flyweight king Nonito Donaire defend his title against South African Moruti Mthalane, while Brian Viloria challenges IBF light-flyweight king Ulises Solis.
The Arthro Kontra Arthritis-sponsored Donaire is set to arrive in Cebu next week with his trainer-father Nonito Sr and wife Rachel to start training at the famed ALA Gym for the fight.
Another Filipino, superbantam sensation Bernabe Concepcion of the Aljoe Jaro Stable, also sees action in the undercard, according to Arum. Also set in the card is popular Mexican Jorge "Travieso" Arce against a TBA.
